Thicker glass does not automatically mean a quieter room. Acoustic performance depends on the noise spectrum, pane asymmetry, laminated layers, IGU cavities, system airtightness and the installation joint.

PRINCIPLE

We identify the noise source first.

Rw provides an overall weighted sound-reduction value, while C and Ctr corrections help interpret different noise spectra. For low-frequency road traffic, a large Rw number alone is not enough — the relevant spectrum correction also matters.

The acoustic indices below cannot be transferred from one IGU to another. Performance changes with glass thickness, asymmetry, lamination, cavity depth and the airtightness of the complete element.

WHAT WE CHECK

Specification starts with the problem.

The first step is understanding the noise source — traffic, voices or low-frequency sound. Glass is then selected together with a check that ventilation or the installation joint does not become the weak link.

Asymmetry separates resonance behaviour

Different inner and outer pane thicknesses can outperform a symmetrical build-up with the same overall glass mass.

Acoustic laminate adds damping

A specialised interlayer can reduce vibration transmission. Its benefit should be assessed in the complete IGU rather than treated as a standalone number.

Frame and seals can become the weak link

A high-performance IGU cannot compensate for air leakage through the system, threshold, hardware or poor adjustment.

The installation joint is part of real room acoustics

Continuous sealing and joint insulation are needed so that laboratory performance is not lost where the frame meets the wall.

Glass data is not the same as room performance

Guardian publishes Rw values up to 52 dB for certain double-glazed and 54 dB for certain triple-glazed LamiGlass Acoustic configurations. Those are tested assemblies, not guaranteed values for every installed window.
